Notes:
His alarm clock seemed to ring even earlier than usual today. Wedge sleepily looked at the clock. No, it was the right time to get up. Okay, well nothing to do about it, but get up then. Wedge slowly got out of bed, wondering where the hell the night had disappeared to.
Twenty minutes later Wedge entered the mess hall to find it surprisingly empty. The rest of the Rogues did have the day off, but could they really ALL be sleeping late? Usually somebody was up and about. If no one else then at least Tycho. The blond alderaanian did not seem to know the idea of sleeping in existed, but then again he did not seem to be bothered by getting up early, so it was really his choice. Wedge went to find some breakfast and sat down with his datapad. He might as well get started on his paperwork since he had no one to talk to.
The rest of the morning passed quietly. By noon Wedge had still seen nothing of the Rogues. He had even checked to make sure none of them had been picked up by the local military police the night before, but miraculously there had been no such reports. Now Wedge started to worry. Was something wrong? He did not have time to contemplate it much longer though. After lunch he had a meeting with General Salm and several other high ranking officers of Starfighter Command. The meeting agenda announced that the topics of the day was landing gear replacements, new prices on unit patches and decorations for the yearly celebration of the battle of Endor. Which for Wedge sounded incredibly boring and unnecessary.
By the time the meeting was finished, Wedge's brain was a mash of numbers, irrelevant facts and different solutions to a million unimportant problems. He entered his office on remote control and dropped into his chair and almost immediately got back up. He had forgotten something! He knew it! Only he did not know what it was he had forgotten. He started looking over his desk and datapads, trying to find any clue to what it might be that he had forgotten.
After several minutes of looking through stuff on his desk he stopped and looked at the wall. He had no idea what it was he had forgotten, but if he had forgotten it then it could not be that important he decided. Could it? The last couple of weeks with little sleep, no R&R and way too much work was starting to take its toll. Angry with him self for not remembering whatever it was he had forgotten he headed towards the hangar. It had been days since he had last had a chance to fly, and he could not fly today either, but at least he could do an inspection of his x-wing.
On his way towards the hangar he started to wonder what the rest of the rogues had done with their day of. He had not seen any of them all day and he had heard no complains about them either which was strange. Wes usually steered up some kind of trouble when he had the time, but today he had heard nothing from the industrious rogue. He turned the last corner before the hangar and was suddenly struck be how quiet it was. He stopped and looked around. He almost thought he remembered what it was he had forgotten, but then he lost it again and after about a minutes thought he moved on. Ten steps later he was at the hangar doors. They opened slowly and Wedge stepped into a blackened out hangar. What? He looked around, but saw nothing and headed towards his fighter. He knew exactly where it was and did not need light to guide him. Just when he was about to reach it the light came on.
To meters to Wedges left and a bit in front of him stood Tycho a holocam in hand ready to record everything. On Wedges right stood a beaming Wes loving his boss response to their little surprise. Wedge took a shocked step back as the lights came on. Directly in front of him stood his x-wing, or at least he was pretty sure it was his x-wing. It had the size and roughly the shape of his x-wing only it did not look like his x-wing. The thing in front of him was not painted in republic colours with red strips down the sides. It was covered in multi coloured gift-wrapping paper. On what Wedge decided had to be the laser canons sat huge bows made in some sort of republic orange paper. Slowly Wedge did a full turn look at everybody in the hangar. He was surprised to see not only all of the Rogues and the mechanics, but also Mirax, Iella and a bunch of others, who were all friends of him and Rogue Squadron. As he turned he noticed they were all holding something that looked like little flags. When he had his back completely turned towards the gift-wrapped x-wing they suddenly started waving the flags and in almost one voice it came. Loud enough to disturb Palpatine in his grave: "Happy life day, Wedge!" Wedge suddenly grinned, so that was what he had forgotten.
